Abriella and her sister Jas are barely surviving. Their parents are dead and the aunt who took them in is determined to work them into the ground. Brie refuses to go to the Fae for help, until Jas is sold to the Unseelie King. Now she must infiltrate the Seelie court and find allies to save her sister.

“Where do you think legends begin, if not from truth?”

Review:

If you absolutely cannot stand love triangles, this might not be your book. However, I thought the romance was really well done and showed character development. Brie’s confusion over the two men shows her naivety about the faerie world and which part of it she belongs in. Of course the two love interests are fae princes, one light and one dark, though neither are perfectly good or evil. The characters are all flawed, they each have their own selfish behaviors and secrecy. They all have something they would destroy everything for, and none of them completely want the same thing. I think that is what saves this tropey love triangle. The author understands how to make the characters believable, while also making this adventure delicious and addictive.

“I can’t even tell someone to have a good day without sounding like I secretly wish they’d die.”

This is a classic fairy tale for adults, with all the delightful tropes that fantasy romance lovers obsess over. A seemingly ordinary girl discovers she has secret abilities and a mysterious history that leaves clues in her memory about who she really is. There are twists and turns, romance and backstabbing. It’s a fun, lighthearted book that is impossible to put down. The author knows how to entertain people, and she does it well. If you love faerie stories but don’t want to get dragged into a complicated and heavy never-ending series, this is your book. This fantasy romance has all the things people love to read, even if they pretend otherwise. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, but also doesn’t go easy on the characters and their development. I’m excited to see how the author wraps it up in the next book.
